Be All That You Can Be
I can’t remember the decade that the Army used that slogan but I can still clearly remember the jingle. The commercials showed the average Joe or Joanna transforming into soldiers, doctors, and all the things that apparently joining the Army can help you become. If only it were that simple.
Every day we receive messages through media, music, friends, family, etc. that maybe we aren’t being all we could be. You’re not thin or fat enough so try this exercise, pill, drink, etc. Your hair isn’t long, short, straight, or natural enough so try this shampoo, conditioner, product, etc. Your skin isn’t light or dark enough so try this spray, this cream, this tanning salon, etc. And let’s not forget that you’re not devout enough so try this devotional, prayer, bible study, etc.
I’m one of those people who constantly questions, am I enough…am I all I can be. Sometimes the answer is a resounding, ‘Hell yes! I’m all that and a bag of chips.’ And other times it’s a tear-filled no. But when I stop to think about it, all I need to be, so that I can be all I can be, is who God needs me to be.
Now don’t get me wrong, my walk in Him could always be more. But God placed each and every one of us on this Earth for a specific purpose. Some of us are here to be calm and rational voices of reason, and others to be the spontaneous radicalists. Some of us are here to be innovators, while others, consumers of those innovations. Some of use are here to be the head honcho or boss babe and others of us are here to be the cheerleaders on the sideline. And some of us are here to admit that we’ve fallen behind in our journey to be more Christ-like while others forge ahead.
The best advice (I’m speaking to myself here) I can offer though is that as long as you have sought God’s direction on whatever it is you’re trying to be, you’ll be it all, in Him.
Until next time…
